CBC.com reported:

The inflation rate hit a 13-year high in September, as rising food and shelter costs pushed the rate up to 5.4 percent.

Higher prices for food and shelter accounted for half of the increase in the overall rate, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said in a statement. But the biggest individual increase in the category was energy, the cost of which rose nearly 25 percent last year.

Economists expected the figure to be around 5.3%, which would have been the highest rate since 2013. But the figure ended up being even higher.
